Admissions Requirements

Information on Admission to the Doctor of Pharmacy Program

Prior to matriculation into the UC San Diego Skaggs School of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences, all accepted applicants must have completed the requirements for the bachelor's degree (B.S. or B.A.). Applicants who have not earned a degree or who will not have earned one prior to the start of classes in the Fall will not be considered. Students currently enrolled in a community college must transfer to a four-year college or university so as to complete the requirements for the bachelor's degree.

Applicants who have earned a degree from a school outside of the United States must have completed at least one year of full-time study at a four-year college or university in the United States prior to application. A four-year college or university is one that is accredited to award bachelor’s degrees. Enrollment in a community college does not satisfy this requirement.

UC San Diego Skaggs School of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences will accept online courses taken remotely from Spring 2020 until Summer 2021, and beyond as needed. We will only accept pass/no pass grades if a letter grade option is not available or for special circumstances. Please contact our offices if you have any questions: sppsadmissions@health.ucsd.edu

Academic Requirements

We ask that prospective applicants use their best professional judgment to determine whether completed, in-progress, and planned coursework meets our academic requirements. Additionally, applicants can check our Institution Course Equivalencies page to determine if they have completed our pre-requisite requirements. In general, we align our requirements with pre-med/health coursework.

Prerequisite Coursework:

Category Requirements Notes
Cell and/or Molecular Biology 1 course of lecture and laboratory
Anatomy or Microbiology or Biochemistry 1 course of lecture and laboratory
Physiology 1 course of lecture and laboratory The study of the biology of whole animals or humans

If multiple courses are offered in the same subject area, the courses taken should be the most academically demanding courses available at the college or university attended. It is also strongly recommended that students take upper division courses in biochemistry, physiology, and cellular and molecular biology. These courses will better prepare students for the comprehensive curriculum provided at UC San Diego.

All required courses must be completed by the end of the summer term prior to matriculation in the fall.

The ability to express oneself clearly in both oral and written English is essential.

Policy on Time Limit for Pre-Requisite Coursework

Our policy is that students who have taken pre-requisite coursework more than 10 years prior to the time of application must repeat that coursework. Some exceptions to this policy may be provided for coursework whose content is not time sensitive or when an applicant has been working in an environment that allowed the applicant to remain up-to-date on the subject.

Examples of non-time sensitive coursework are English literature, public speaking, calculus and other non-science courses.

Exceptions will only be granted by the Admissions Office upon review of the applicant's academic and/or work history.

If you have any questions please email us at sppsadmissions@ucsd.edu.

Institution Course Equivalencies

The Office of Admissions has created Institution Course Equivalencies for many U.S. and International schools. Please click here for Institution Course Equivalencies.

AP and IB Credit

Prerequisite credit from AP and/or IB examinations taken in high school will be accepted if the student's undergraduate school has accepted the examination, provided course credit, and posted the credit to the student's transcript. Official documentation is not necessary until you have received and accepted an offer of admission with our program and we have requested official transcripts the summer before you start as a P1. At that time, you should either provide official AP and/or IB examination scores or ensure that your official college transcripts provide sufficient information about the credit you received for those examinations.

Letter of Recommendation Requirements

Applicants must submit a minimum of two letters of recommendation, though three are recommended. Applicants may not submit on behalf of their letter writers, which can include, but is not limited to, using past evaluations for other applications/programs.
